“Holding My Tongue” Ozzie Cummins
My sons were down for a visit from Portland. We decided to visit our local “Wildlife Images” for the afternoon. Of course, I took my Nikon D90 with its Nikkor 18-200 mm zoom lens to take some photos to document our time there. We all had a great time visiting all the “critters”. Not only did I take images of our families, but I got quite a few of the wildlife, too.
This bald eagle seemed to be particularly photogenic and he didn’t seem to mind having his portrait taken, either. This image was captured using the 255 mm (Equivalent full-frame length), a shutter speed of 1/640, an f-stop of 5.6 to blur the background, and an ISO of 200.
I‘ve always enjoyed the art of other’s photography, so decided to try it myself. I joined our local camera club, the Caveman Camera Club (CCC) in October of 2008 to learn some of the many skills helpful in getting better images in most all lighting conditions. I enjoy the excuse to get out and about to capture images (moments in time) of landscapes, wildlife, and the flora and fauna of the area. Yes, I even enjoy the geeky technical photography stuff, too.
While I still do a little civil engineering and dozer work on the side (I am retired), I spend most of my free time playing tennis, getting out on back country Forest roads, inflatable kayaking our rivers, and capturing photos of “my world.”
“I thoroughly enjoy life — all my family, and the people, activities, wildlife, and places that enrich it.”

“Ready to Launch” is a shot I took at the Tulelake Wildlife Refuge, South of Klamath Falls, on New Years Day in 2013. Temperatures for the day started at zero degrees and the eagles and hawks were abundant. With my Canon 5D, Mk II set on burst mode, I waited for this subject to get uncomfortable with my presence and take flight. I got several good images, with this on being my favorite. My camera settings were: ISO 500; 1/640 second; f/8; 280mm (200mm with a 1.4 extension tube).

This photo was made for the Club’s February assigned subject of “Temptation”. The image of me was taken at home with my Nikon camera, using one flash from the right side. I used an old pair of scissors that didn’t have a shiny surface. I wore a warm colored shirt that combined with skin tones would not distract from the beard and scissors. I’ve been an member of the club for 5 years, and assist as a mentor. I also work as the club’s Electronic Image Coordinator, receiving and showing member’s photos at competitions and educational nights.
