First Place – Image of the Month
“Still Life #1” Arlene Pence
Arlene’s Comments: “For a long time, I had wanted to do a classic still life with my large format camera using 4”x 5” color film. I had in mind using a wicker basket lid and a copper pot I found in an antique store and a variety of pears. I did the setup beside my open patio doors on a slightly overcast day to take advantage of the naturally soft light, which I always think is so beautiful. Unfortunately, I didn’t record the lens and exposure data.”

“Sunrise at Crescent City Pier” Jim Ingraham
Jim’s Comments: Nikon D700 with 28-70 at 34mm. 1/320th at F22 and ISO 800. The higher ISO was unnecessary. I simply forgot to check it. Looking back I would have chosen ISO 200 and 1/160 at F16 to limit diffraction. I’m not sure F11 would have allowed everything from front to back to be in focus. An interesting note: I am on the west coast shooting a sunrise. Ozzie (aka Sherlock Holmes) pointed out that the sun should be behind me. Actually I am looking back toward land from a little U-shaped harbor.

“Photo Finish” Joel Takarsh
Joel’s Comments: Photo was taken at the Josephine Co. fair-grounds race track on July 7, 2013.
Taken with a Nikon D4 camera. Lens used was a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 lens but attached a Nikon 1.7x teleconverter…effectively giving me a 500mm lens. Shutter speed was set at 1/1250th of a second. F/stop was 9.0. ISO at 800. Used a monopod for stability. Jockeys and horses were coming down the stretch
and I shot a series of images during that run and thought this particular shot really captured the feeling of race action and excitement.
