I was inspired to do a “light paintings” image of me holding my great grandfather’s Winchester 1894, octagon barreled rifle. This rifle was purchase by my great grandfather in about 1895. My great grandfather used it; his son, my grandfather; then my father; and I have used it for years. I wanted to show a rather sleepy old cowboy standing guard — this cowboy was sitting and asleep on duty. Light was painted on the subject as if it came in a window rather from the model’s right side in a totally dark room. I acted as the “Old Cowboy.” My wife, Lisa, did the light painting in total darkness at 10 PM on March 1st of 2020 — all with a small flashlight.
Camera setting details: 48 mm; 10 sec. exposure; f16; and ISO of 100 with a Nikon 750 camera and 28-300 Nikkor lens.

Reflections Of Fire Ross Steensland
This photo is a composite of the foreground and sky. The foreground is a small cow pond that my family has been hunting near for years. It was shot in early September at sunset.

Canon 6DmkII, Canon 24-70 f2.8, B+W polarizer filter. The sky image was taken right after a thunderstorm. I blended it into the sky via select and mask tool in photoshop. To create the refection, I cut out a segment of sky, rotated it 180, warped it to fit perspective, and blended it into the pond and the original tree refections. f11 1/3′ iso 50

This image was taken in early January, 2020 on the Northern California coast, just North of the town of Klamath. I spent the morning chasing Fog, Mist, or Rain for the assigned subject. I loved the morning sun filtering through the fog, coupled with some nice surf at this location. This was taken using my Canon 5D, Mk IV and 24-105mm lens. My settings were: 24mm, f/18, ISO 1600, and 1/200 sec.

Diverging Skies Ross Steensland
This photo is a composite blend of two night shots. The sky was taken during the 2nd night of the Milepost 97 fire on I5 just South of Riddle. The foreground is the shoreline of Galesville Reservoir. I light painted all of the cracked mud as well as the distant snags.
The foreground and sky both have multiple exposures blended to produce even lighting and depth of field.
