I had shot this particular plant over a series of days trying to get the perfect shot. This small insect was there nearly every day, but getting all the elements to come together was super challenging. I wanted in my mind to get a single bloom, in the right spot plus the insect at the right spot, with sharp focus throughout. The insect was the hardest part as it NEVER stopped moving and in fact was very camera shy. Nearly every shot with the insect in it inevitably was out of focus due to movement or other focus problems. Compounding the problem was hand holding the heavy camera/lens combination, while coaxing the insect to stay high up on the blooming part of the plant. Shooting at f/29 for maximum DOF did not help either. Eventually I managed to get a couple images that I was happy with, and learned that patience outweighs skill in some instances.
Shot with a Canon 5DMKIV, 100m lens combination. Speedlights we used off camera, ISO 1250, f/29, at 1/10 sec.
Sean Bagshaw will be our guest speaker for the March 6th education meeting. Sean is a landscape/travel photographer and photo educator based in Ashland, Oregon. My lucky stars must have been active when I was driving back home around midnight one night from scouting the river. I passed this pulled over vehicle on the Indian Mary side where it looked like they were changing a tire or something and realized as I crossed Hellgate bridge that it might be worth turning left instead of right at the end of the bridge. Sure enough, the bridge was lit up beautifully by their headlights. I was able to get off a few shots before they departed and voila.
Coffee Break Susan Sheets
This is from my old neighborhood in Portland. I love that everything in this image is black and white except for her beautiful skin and the coffee.
“This image was taken at Lake Lemolo in Oregon last June. It was shot just before sunrise. I was attracted to the stillness of the scene and the way the warm tone of the boat stood out against the blues and greens of the background. The technical details: Shot with a Nikon D850 and Sigma 24-105 lens at 48mm. F16 at 1/30th second and ISO 800, tripod mounted.”

Here’s Looking At You Greg Smith
This shot was taken in the Monterey area in March of 2016 We came upon this handsome subject sunning on the rocks at the Asilomar State Marine Reserve. I took numerous shots of my patient model and liked this pose the best. With my older Photoshot Elements software I was unable to manage the highlights of the ocean. With the transition to Lightroom editing software I was able to apply a gradient mask to the water area and bring the ocean back into a nice balance with the foreground. The shot was taken using my Canon 5d, Mk III and 70-200mm telephoto lens. My settings were: 200mm, f/2.8, ISO 400, and 1/4000th of a second.
Halloween brings out my “darker side” and I always feel like it’s a photographic opportunity that most do not explore. I purchased this horror movie doll from our local Halloween store because I knew her piercing blue eyes and weird face would command attention. I shot this in an upstairs bedroom on a Victorian chair and placed her and Frank against the wall. Natural light was coming from the right and a speed light from the left. Most of the processing was done in On1 software by adding several textures in modest amounts to give it a slightly gritty look and lastly with a sunburst texture.
Shot with a Canon 5DMKIV and 24-70 lens combination. ISO 100, f/5 at 1/30 second.

This image is from the Boatnik carnival this year. It was a little showery that evening. I caught this young boy with his umbrella taking it all in on the steps of the Rockstar ride.
