March 2018 Winners

Here are the results of the March 7, 2018 Caveman Camera Club competition:

Guest Lead Judge:  Matt Connell – Fire Mountain Gems.  Member Judges:  Lynda Noles and Dave Church (member judges do not score their own images).

Image of the Month:

Lynda Noles’ “Koi” in the assigned category.                                                                                    Attached is a jpeg of Lynda’s winning image, a “head shot” of her, and her “Daily Courier” release.      Lynda writes about her image:

“My “assigned, straight down photo” of the Koi was taken from the bridge across the moat that surrounds part of the Colorado Bell Casino in Laughlin, Nevada.  I had to reach as far as I could to get this shot, and therefore used my lightweight iPhone for this picture.  The iPhone automatic settings were 1/120 sec. @ f2.2, ISO 50. I took this picture on February 25, 2018 at 9:30 am.”

“I am an amateur photographer who particularly likes the assigned photo challenges that the Caveman Camera Club has each month.  I have been a Club member for 3 1/2 years.”

Birds Of A Feather by David Church

This image was taken at Bryce Canyon National Park, at one of the overlooks along the drive.  The two crows were just sitting on the ledge and I quietly approached them to start taking photos.  I was the only person at the overlook at that time.  They were pretty cooperative.  The shot was taken at mid-day, but it was slightly overcast, and I think that helped soften the image capture a bit.
The camera is a Canon 70d with a 18-135 mm lens at 64mm. The photo was shot at ISO 200 at f10 at 1/200 second.  It was processed with both Lightroom and Photoshop programs.
“I’ve taken photos most of my life starting at home with my Dad’s darkroom.  I joined the Caveman Camera Club in 2009, and since then have enjoyed learning and serving with a great group of folks”.

“The wood carver at It’s a Burl in Cave Junction was thoroughly engrossed in his work one rainy afternoon in October. He described it as his meditation.  Mine was photographing him.”

Electronic Competition – Open Category

1st Place – Image of the Month

“Curious Spider” by  Jeremy Vanschoonhoven

“This Image was taken in October near Wilderville Oregon while on a hike looking for bugs! This spider was floating through the air and landed on this blackberry bush, and was so cute he kept hiding from me then peaking around the leaves to look at me! I think he could see his reflection in the lens. I was using my Sony a99ii with the Sony 100mm macro lens. My shutter speed was 1/125th ISO 2000 F9. I used an off camera flash hand held. I was also shooting hand held with the camera so it was quite a tricky shot to get the spider in focus get the flash in the right spot and take the shot.”

“I started getting serous about photography last year and am loving it! I cant wait to see what the future holds!”

“The Warrior Beetle” by Rose Christner

This was a total of 23 stacked macro photos compiled into one in Photoshop. Jeremy V. taught me how to do it with this model beetle. Dale G. loaned me his 100mm and I was really enjoying trying to capture everything. I used the Canon 80D and shot this at 1/80sec, F7.1, 100mm, ISO 1600 and on a tripod with extra lighting. The world of macro fascinates me and has given me a greater respect for our smaller creatures of this planet and I look forward to learning more.

“Tilikum Bridge” by Jim Heern

Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People is a cable-stayed bridge across the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, United States. It was designed by TriMet, the Portland metropolitan area‘s regional transit authority. The bridge also serves city buses and the Portland Streetcar, as well as bicycles, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles. Private cars and trucks are not permitted on the bridge. It is the first major bridge in the U.S. that was designed to allow access to transit vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians but not cars.

Construction began in 2011, and the bridge was officially opened on September 12, 2015. In homage to Native American civilizations, the bridge was named after the local Chinook word for people. The Tilikum Crossing was the first new bridge to be opened across the Willamette River in the Portland metropolitan area since 1973.
